Aquaplang – What is and how you can avoid it

Aquaplang - What is and how you can avoid it - Autokappa | Blog | Autokappa

Aquaplang is a phenomenon caused by the formation of a water film between the tires and the road.

At that time, the adhesion of the car decreases drastically, since the strips of tires are no longer in contact with the streets are in very small contact. Therefore, the driver loses control over the brakes, on the direction and even acceleration.

Since it is a very unpleasant situation, which can cause itcindent, it is good to be prepared and know what to do to avoid a tragedy.

Acquaplaning can be caused by excesses of water accumulations on the surface of the road or its holes and bumps, which can collect large quantities of water. The layer of water must have a minimum of 2.5 mm to produce the waterplang phenomenon.

This phenomenon is also influenced by the condition of the tires, the thickness of the tread and the speed with which the car moves when it comes into contact with the layer of water.

  • The more worn the tires are, the smaller the water they can eliminate.
  • The new tires can eliminate up to 10 liters of water/second.
  • In the situation in which you drive in rain conditions, the following events can occur:
  • The engine can be listened to more and more, but although it is more tuned, the speed remains the same;
  • The steering wheel becomes very soft;
  • You have the impression that the back of the car «runs».

To take control of the car during Acquaplang, the most important thing is not to panic and then follow these steps:

  1. Do not press the brakes to the maximum;
  2. Gradually take the foot on the accelerator pedal;
  3. Keep the steering wheel right;
  4. If started, stop the self -cilot;
  5. When you think the car takes control, you can start braking easily.

Calm is the key element in such situations. It is very important not to brush the car or press the pedals too much and pull the steering wheel, because when passing the water area, the tires will return to contact with the asphalt and you can cause an accident.

The good news is that there are some solutions through which it is possible to carry out the phenomenon called Aquaplary.

These solutions will be connected, both to your driving technique and to the technical conditions of your car:

  • Check the tire conditions
  • Sometimes I don’t drive sometimes when the road is wet
  • Avoid the hand of the car as much as possible
  • You’re always careful!

We hope that these suggestions will be useful to you, but at the same time you will never be in unpleasant situations during the sofa.

Conclusion

Aquaplaning is a dangerous phenomenon that occurs when a layer of water builds up between a vehicle’s tires and the road surface. This water film significantly reduces tire traction, causing the tires to lose proper contact with the pavement. When this happens, the driver can experience a sudden loss of control over essential functions such as braking, steering, and acceleration, increasing the risk of accidents.

The severity of aquaplaning depends on several factors, including vehicle speed, tire tread depth, tire pressure, and the amount of water on the road. Worn or improperly inflated tires are particularly vulnerable, as they cannot effectively channel water away from the contact surface. Similarly, driving at high speeds during rain or on flooded roads can drastically increase the likelihood of losing control.

Preventive measures are crucial to avoid aquaplaning. Drivers should reduce speed in wet conditions, maintain proper tire pressure, ensure tires have adequate tread depth, and avoid sudden maneuvers that could worsen loss of traction. Additionally, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles allows more time to react if the car begins to hydroplane.

In conclusion, aquaplaning represents a serious hazard for drivers, especially in wet conditions. Awareness, careful driving, and proper vehicle maintenance are key to minimizing risks associated with this phenomenon. By taking preventive actions and adjusting driving behavior to road conditions, drivers can maintain control, reduce the likelihood of accidents, and ensure safer journeys during rain or on water-covered roads.
