Reuse of small scale waste

«It is essential that everyone does their part»: it is usually with this phrase that all the texts, articles, videos or campaigns that we see there on prevention and the fight against the environmental degradation process in which we find ourselves ends. From there, the question «But how can I put sustainability into practice?» It is more than common. The separation of waste for recycling and energy saving in simple measures in everyday life are examples of simple solutions that reflect that it is possible to contribute to the environment at home and today we will deal with another lesser -known process, but it is already reality in homes and small productions in the country, in particular in rural areas: domestic composting.

The alternative, even, is already in the process of involving one of the main urban areas of the country to increase and help the elaboration of a public policy that encourages the practice of internal composting. The pilot project of the city of San Paolo, «Compound San Paolo«, Initially it will distribute 2,000 domestic compositions throughout the municipality and the goal is that the idea of becoming a permanent program. In today’s post, we will face this simple process that has contributed to the reduction of the residues produced in families. Give a look!

Domestic composting as an alternative to the reuse of waste

Domestic compost or domestic composting are a process that transforms organic waste into quality fertilizers for gardens and any type of cultivation. Other than composting focused on the reception and transformation of large volumes of waste Affairs from companiesWhich is generally outsourced, the domestic composting process is a practicable alternative for the reuse of small -scale waste. As the name suggests, the system can be performed in the courtyards – with the technique, it is estimated that a family can reduce the residues generated in their daily life of over 70%. Imagine what you could reuse with this: fragments of food such as fruit shells, vegetables, shells and stems, cooked or cooked foods until in small quantities, coffee stains, pruning and leaves, untreated sawdust, dry leaves … if you have doubts about what should not be composed in this process, Log in to this link.

It is worth mentioning that, as the composting focused on recycling large volumes of organic waste, the domestic compost is aligned with the principles of National policy on solid wastewhich aims to eliminate the landfills open this year. The law is one of the main outbreaks of the aforementioned pilot project «Composite San Paolo», which wants to frame the city in determining that, since August, the municipalities refer only to landfills (for which there is still no reuse) as hygiene roles, have used absorbent, diapists, among others.

How to perform this process at home?

Domestic composting

Basically, three plastic boxes of the same size are needed to assemble the composer. Two of them must have small holes on the bottom and on the side for ventilation.

Immerse the boxes, leaving what has no holes underneath. What is at the top must be filled with a quantity of land containing Californian red worms: this species is used for its good resistance and adaptation to the composting system. In addition, collect a small supply of dry organic material: leaves or sawdust, for example. Ok, now you already have all the necessary equipment to start.

Organic waste management

The next step is to organize your organic waste separately. With a small amount accumulated, open the lid of the mounted composer and place the material. To maintain the ventilation of the worms, it is not indicated to spread the material throughout the box, so leave it in a corner. Then take the dry organic material and cover the steriles: this will ward off the unwanted insects. Follow this procedure until the box is filled. It is usually indicated that it is powered for about 30 days.

Maintenance: time to change the position of the box

Once the box above is full, change it with the one between the first and third in the stack. Fill the new box with the worms and continue the process of eviction of the staff, covering them with the dry organic material. In the next 30 days, the box found in the middle will continue to pass through the composting process. When changing the positions of the boxes again, the deposited material will become fertilizer.

Natural liquid fertilizer

In addition to the solid fertilizer, composting generates a natural liquid fertilizer. It deposits in the compartment located at the base of the structure, dripping from the process that occurs in the upper boxes. Unlike what happens in landfills, in which the suspension derived from the decomposition of the mixtures of organic waste with other contaminating waste, domestic compost becomes an excellent material for spraying plants.

Why does compost help the environment?

The recycling and reuse of waste have a significant impact and great importance to solve contemporary environmental problems with the direct contribution in the reduction of environmental liabilities and in the prevention of soil pollution, rivers and lakes caused by contamination and incorrect disposal. With the transformation of the characteristics of waste into nutrients rich in material, the composting promotes the enhancement of waste, previously without relevance and which would be intended for landfills, in composite and fertilizer organic fertilizers, playing an important role in the conservation of the environment.

Did you already know the alternative of domestic composting and its environmental benefits? The possibility of performing the process – simply and inside – causes a reflection on all organic waste that we generate in everyday life and which we usually consider only garbage.
